The announcement of Android 12, the next major release of the world’s most popular mobile operating system, is getting closer and closer. On the other hand, almost exactly one year has passed since the release of the Android 11 Developer Preview 1, dated February 19, 2020.

Although not a few users are still waiting for this latest version of the robot, work on the next release is proceeding fast and rumors are already multiplying: from the hibernation of unused apps to a couple of smart features, passing through the first wallpapers and the last full-bodied leak, there is already a lot of meat on the fire.

smartphones and tablets are sure to receive Android 12

That said, with the Google announcement still missing, uncertainty reigns as to which Android smartphones and tablets will receive the update and how long to wait. For this reason it is advisable to begin to clarify.

Although in fact most OEMs do not disclose the official list of models receiving the update until after the release of the same by Big G (someone does not deign to do so even after), some whiteflies exist and for rest you can already make some assumptions.

  • Samsung
  • Google
  • Nokia
  • OnePlus
  • The others

For some time now, Samsung has been signaling itself as one of the Android manufacturers most attentive to software updates: last August the promise of three generations of Android updates arrived, with an attached list of 38 models to which will be guaranteed, which also includes the Galaxy S10 series. Here’s the full list:

  • Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, S20 Ultra, S20 + 5G, S20 +, S20 5G, S20
  • Galaxy S10 5G, S10 +, S10, S10e, S10 Lite
  • Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, Note 20 Ultra, Note 20 5G, Note 20, Note 10+ 5G, Note 10+, Note 10 5G, Note 10, Note 10 Lite
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G, Z Fold 2, Z Flip 5G, Z Flip, Fold 5G, Fold
  • Galaxy A71 5G, A71, A51 5G, A51, A90 5G
  • Galaxy Tab S7 + 5G, Tab S7 +, Tab S7 5G, Tab S7, Tab S6 5G, Tab S6, Tab S6 Lite

To all these must obviously be added the models presented later, such as the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition and the whole new Samsung Galaxy S21 flagship series. Without obviously forgetting the upcoming arrivals of the various series listed.

It is much less easy to hazard a prediction on older models that are not on the official list.

On the timing of the release of Android 12, in the absence of certainties, it is necessary to move into the field of hypotheses: usually, Samsung begins to release the new major update for its latest flagships a few months after the roll out by Google, while the ‘wait is generally longer for cheaper and older tablets and smartphones. Just think of the case of Android 11, released by Google on September 8 and by Samsung, for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20, only starting in December.

That of Google will obviously be the first move and therefore also the decisive one: the owners of Pixel smartphones will, as always, be the first to receive the new update, in this case Android 12. This is not only valid for the final version, but also for the Developer Preview that will precede it in the coming months.

As for the list of ready models for Android 12, the Pixels receive three years of software updates, so the new release will arrive on Pixel 3, 4, 5, 3a, 4a, 4a 5G. Nothing to do for previous models, including the Pixel 2, updated for the last time in December 2020.

At the time of the relaunch of the brand with the first Android smartphones, Nokia had made a high-sounding promise: fast and long-lasting updates. Although numerous models are supported with good consistency, timeliness can be definitely improved.

Just think of the case of Android 11: Google released it in September 2020, but Nokia only took a month to communicate which models it would update and, despite having promised the first updates for Q4 2020, only this month something has happened. finally moved.

Most Nokia models receive two Android updates, so those launched with Android 10 and later should be sure to get Android 12, although they are unlikely to see it before January 2022.

OnePlus often lingers with monthly security patches, however it is usually fast with major updates, at least for the most recent models: OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro received Android 11 about a month after the Pixels, OnePlus 8T had it out-of-the-box, but all the other models are still waiting.

The Chinese house has confirmed that OnePlus 5 and 5T will not receive Android 11, therefore it can be assumed that OnePlus 6 and 6T will never see Android 12. They are instead sure of the OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, Nord, Nord N10 5G update, Nord N100, 7, 7 Pro, 7T, 7T Pro. Also in this case, the main unknown is the “when”.

The others

As for the other OEMs, it is difficult to predict. Smartphones and tablets that arrived on the market with Android 11 should receive Android 12 by 2021, but any other hypothesis would be risky.
